Trapped under the thumb of his Jewish mother, Elliot lived a secret double life. He was the suit-wearing manager of his parents’ decrepit flea-pit of a hotel in White Lake, New York on the weekends, and the leather-wearing gay activist of Manhattan during the week.
As the years passed and the hotel business began to decline, Elliot hosted plays, musicals, and local festivals in a bid to save his family’s livelihood. In the process, Elliot became the area’s official issuer of event permits. And on July 17, 1969, he put that authority to good use. Hearing that the Woodstock promoters had lost their license to stage their show in Wallkill, Elliot made a phone call to Michael Lang and offered him a permit to bring Woodstock to White Lake. The next few weeks were the best of Elliot’s life. It was the time he learned to live, love and dance freely.
