And carried away with food. On today’s show, Duncan grills some BBQ sausages and shares a “quick-trick-tip” on getting a better tasting result by letting the sausages cook in their own fat for a short while - and then pricking them a couple of minutes into cooking, to release the fat. Most people prick their BBQ sausages before they start to grill them. Cooking your sausages with a bit of fat makes them taste so much better. Empress Of Jazz (CD)

Nina Simone is often referred to as the High Priestess Of Soul and the Empress Of Jazz, but the influence of this 15-time Grammy Award nominated singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger and civil rights activist reaches much further than that.

Eunice Kathleen Waymon (1933-2003) originally aspired to be a classical pianist and is generally classified as a jazz musician but her music covers an eclectic variety of styles, from jazz, soul, folk r&b and gospel to pop music.

Her vocal style is characterised by intense passion, a loose vibrato and a slightly androgynous timbre, in part due to her unusually low vocal range. She was famed for paying great attention to the musical expression of emotions.

Best known for incredible songs like My Baby Just Cares For Me, I Loves You Porgy and To Be Young, Gifted & Black, but also for her tempestuous nature and volatile moods which we now know was due to bipolar disorder, first diagnosed in the mid 60s but kept secret until 04 Simone was truly a genuine superstar of the highest order, with talent to burn.

The Empress Of Jazz is a specially compiled collection of studio and live recordings assembled to highlight a handful of Simones classics (Summertime, Cotton-Eyed Joe, Black Is The Colour Of My True Loves Hair) alongside a clutch of lesser known tracks, and long-forgotten live recordings.

It’s always a welcomed thing when an album is released with a bonus remix disc, because bonuses are always cool. Disc one features 16 songs and abounds with Afro-Latin rhythms, guaranteeing that this compilation will get a lot of play during the coming summer months. Whilst all the tracks are good, there are some that just stick out from the rest. The long awaited 4th album from Bliss has arrived, and the wait was well worth it. This is truly magnificent music & is certainly a big favourite in Happy Guru’s daily shuffle of tunes in the office.

No One Built This Moment is the brand new album from the Danish quartet Bliss - featuring Boy George, the former lead singer of Culture Club, Sophie Barker of Zero 7, and Lisbeth Scott from Steven Spielberg’s Munich and Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ.

“American Heart” is the without doubt the defining track on this album, awesome acoustic guitar riffs blend with pulsing percussion and maracas while to vocals of Boy George and Alexandra Hanmede meld together in perfect union.

Tracks move easily through up-beat electro grooves and mellow chill-out melodies. Instruments include strings, synths, flute, acoustic guitar, percussion and piano.
