Valentine’s Day is a bit like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day - it reminds me of some corporate greedy grab for card sales for Hallmark. Call me a cynic, but I’ve never been a fan of any of these days. I’ve held these views ever since I can remember. Even as a young lad, I would tell my Mum, “I’m only saying happy Mother’s Day Mum because we were reminded before we left school yesterday to say Happy Mother’s Day to our Mum this morning”. I’d then add, “I love you everyday, Mummy. Not just because it’s Mother’s Day, today”

I find Valentine’s Day ‘exclusion-al’. I have been in a relationship for about 12 years, but before this time when I was single - that’s when I really had a reason to dislike Valentine’s Day. All the couples would be sending one another flowers and going out for romantic candle lit dinners etc, and the lonely singles have it rubbed in their face that they’re still alone. Everyone wants to be loved, or to share love. Being single is very hard for some people to have to live with - it’s lonely. My heart goes out to my friends who are single and want to be in a relationship. They live with these feelings everyday. But, Valentine’s Day brings those feelings roaring to the forefront and amplifies the feelings of being alone and without a lover. I really dislike the sentiments of Valentine’s Day for this reason. I’d be so much happier for Valentine’s Day to be a celebration of all love between all people - friends, family, neighbors and even strangers. It usually takes something like a natural disaster to bring the good spirit of love out of people. Sharing compassion, love and kindness with a stranger comes so easily when we’re faced with fear. Fear is the opposite of Love - Not Hate.

My Facebook status says: “If You Love Someone .. Tell Them .. You Never Know When You’ll See Them Again.”

How much can a Koala Bare?
Koalas are the most amazingly cute Australian animals - we all adore them. It breaks my heart to see them in pain and effected by the recent Victorian bush fires. Watch this attached video of a Victorian Bush Fire Volunteer finding a lost and bewildered Koala, and offering the little fury friend a drink of much needed water. This is just the cutest thing I have seen in a long time. My partner Simon was telling me just now that this fireman was on the national news this morning and they have named the Koala “Sam”. Sam is now in temporary care at a local wildlife rescue centre - he’ll be released back to to where they found him once he has recovered and re-hydrated. I hope you enjoy the news story. EARTHLINGS is a feature length documentary about humanity’s absolute dependence on animals (for pets, food, clothing, entertainment, and scientific research) but also illustrates our complete disrespect for these so-called “non-human providers.” The film is narrated by Academy Award nominee Joaquin Phoenix (GLADIATOR) and features music by the critically acclaimed platinum artist Moby .

With an in-depth study into pet stores, puppy mills and animals shelters, as well as factory farms, the leather and fur trades, sports and entertainment industries, and finally the medical and scientific profession, EARTHLINGS uses hidden cameras and never before seen footage to chronicle the day-to-day practices of some of the largest industries in the world, all of which rely entirely on animals for profit. Powerful, informative and thought-provoking, EARTHLINGS is by far the most comprehensive documentary ever produced on the correlation between nature, animals, and human economic interests. There are many worthy animal rights films available, but this one transcends the setting. EARTHLINGS cries to be seen. Highly recommended!

EARTHLINGS has taken five years to produce. What began as a series of Public Service Announcements on spaying and neutering pets, evolved into a feature-length film on every major animal-related issue. Writer/Director Shaun Monson began the process by shooting footage at animal shelters in South Central L.A., Long Beach and North Hollywood. The PSAs were soon completed as his interest moved to other problem areas, like food and scientific research. In time, he accumulated a small library of material from several animal welfare organizations, and started editing. The process was a slow one. As footage gradually came in, Joaquin’s narration was recorded (in stages), and a soundtrack was added. Along with all of Moby’s music, some original pieces were also written for the film. In 2005, EARTHLINGS premiered at the Artivist Film Festival, (where it won Best Documentary Feature), followed by the Boston International Film Festival, (where it won the Best Content Award), and most recently at the San Diego Film Festival, (where it won Best Documentary Film, as well as the Humanitarian Award to Joaquin Phoenix for his work on the film). EARTHLINGS will be available on DVD on November 4, 2005.
