I Am Because We Are

June 27th, 2008

I love Madonna and she could poo on my head and I’d be grateful. I’d then bottle the poo and sell it on ebay and get on the 6 o’clock news for selling Madonna poo for $30,000. Would I then donate the money to a Madonna charity? No, don’t be silly. I’d take myself shopping!
It’s rumored that Maddy and hubby Guy Ritchie are “on the rocks” in the love quarters and that Madonna is soon moving back to NYC from her England Estate to settle into single life & more fabulosity of her music, fashion and film ventures. I knew it wouldn’t last. Can you imagine being married to Madonna. Well, most gay men who love her probably could - but let’s face it - she’d be a big handful. And so am I. But enough about me.

Madonna has a new documentary film coming out, “I Am Because We Are” - which you can learn more about by going to her website here.

Rather than me rambling, have a watch of this short film footage that explains what the film is all about. I hope you enjoy it. Dunc.

Spelling Mistakes Make Me Mormal

June 27th, 2008

When ever I write a blog, I of course go back and scan over it for grammatical or spelling errors. Usually I read the post twice before I click the “publish” button. Nearly 9 times out of 10 I still manage to let slip a spelling mistake. “How embarrassments”. The care factor sits at about 5.6 out of 10 on this fascinating piece of trivia for Friday. Keep in Happy Places and be very carefull off speelling mistakez, Duncan. ;-)

The Truth About Facebook

June 27th, 2008

I’m still a sucker for Facebook - but as I often write about - the moment you publish or upload any information about yourself, you’re giving yourself us for public access information adoption. Please keep in mind any content that you upload is not yours anymore, as soon as you publish. People have become more and more complacent about information sharing on the WWW. As this attached video well explains, Facebook allows the user to share detailed personal information including such things as sexual orientation, your date of birth, home town, address, mobile & phone numbers, and god forbid - your real full name as the top reference. When I first joined, I had a mass of personal contact information on my page. I was getting MSN Messenger & Skype requests for chats from people I had no idea who they were and even a few anonymous calls on my mobile. Yes, you can set privacy setting on your information, but remember that you are relying on other “friends” being responsible with their log-in details. Facebook is a fabulous online social network utility and I really love spending time in their chatting to friends and meeting new people. I’ve even been so fortunate to find old friends from New York and London that I wouldn’t have found had it not been for Facebook. Just be careful how you share your information and be aware of your privacy settings. Just as you would like to protect the innocence of your children from online stalkers - protect yourself and be weary of potential implications that your ‘information sharing’ might pose. Be responsible and remember, “Less Is Always More”.

My DNA Is Being Decoded By Sodium Benzoate

June 26th, 2008

For years I have said that food additives will one day be known as one of the biggest killers of people. Far-fetched? No way. Kids are already running rife and more than ever with the new-age diseases like ADHD (Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) and so-on. You only have to turn to the back of any commerical food packets and see the list of food additives that constitute a finished food product. The list of additives and colourings is nothing short of terrifying. What do we everyday people know about them? We know bugger all. Unless you’re in a food lab and across the vast research about these hundreds of man-made additives - you have no clue what you’re putting in your cake hole.

For someone who smokes cigarettes - you’d think I wouldn’t be as paranoid as I am about simple food additives, but I am - and with good reason. A few weeks back I blogged about a terrifying food additive that has food scientists climbing the wall and the big food houses are doing nothing about it but continuing to add it to their foods. You can go back to read that blog “Aspartame: A Deadly & Disabling Artificial Sweetener” By Clicking Here. If you didn’t get a chance to read it then - please spend a couple of minutes doing so now. I encourage you to also spend a few minutes doing some online searches on “Aspartame” and see the insane amount of political and nutritional debates going on about how damaging this fake sugar is.

An article from The West Australian - A health scare has erupted after a common preservative used in popular soft drinks and fruit juices was linked to serious cell damage, prompting health experts to warn parents to limit their children’s consumption of the drinks. Research from Britain showed the preservative 211, known as sodium benzoate, could switch off vital parts of DNA, seriously damaging cells. Molecular biology expert Peter Piper, of Sheffield University, found that vast amounts could even result in cirrhosis of the liver and degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s. The chemical is produced naturally in berries and apples, but is used in large quantities by manufacturers to prolong the shelf life of soft drinks, sport drinks, cordial and fruit juices. Soft drinks containing the preservative include Pepsi Max, Fanta, Sprite and Oasis. Read The Rest Of The Article Here.

Read Up On Sodium Benzoate on Wikipedia From Here.

COCA-COLA Australia has no plans to phase out a controversial additive in its drinks, despite moves in Britain to remove it. Sodium benzoate has been linked to damage to DNA and hyperactivity in children, and is used as a preservative in Diet Coke in Australia. Coca-Cola in Britain said it had begun withdrawing the additive from Diet Coke in January in response to consumer demand for more natural products. Sodium benzoate is used to stop fizzy drinks going mouldy.

Disco Delays Dementia

Open the windows and Pump Your Disco.

Not only is dancing a great way to keep the body moving, but more specifically with old people, dancing helps prevent dementia. Many research papers have looked at how Alzheimer’s patients have benefited tremendously from Dance. Dance was the only physical activity that benefited the brain. This was attributed to the cerebral rather than the physical aspect of dance. Researchers found that the relationship between the mind-stimulating effects of dancing. In a recent study of nearly 500 people by the Albert Einstein Center in the Bronx, N.Y., dancing was the only regular physical activity associated with a significant decrease in the incidence of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s, which slowly degrades brain and memory function, affects 4 million Americans over the age of 60. Dementia, a broader category of diminished mental ability, affects between 6 million and 7 million. Dancing is tremendously beneficial in keeping us young. It retards the aging process immensley. It benefits our heart, cardiovascular system and increases our lung capacity. Fact: The muscle exertion and breathing rates of dancers performing in one dance competition is equivalent to those of cyclists, swimmers and an Olympic-level 800-meter runner. Dance aids in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, which is a major concern for woman, especially during post-menopause because of the significant drop in estrogen that occurs at this stage. A decrease in our estrogen levels is what stops calcium from being absorbed into our bones. Dance also keeps joints lubricated, which helps prevent arthritis. Dance exercises our bodies to allow for increased circulation. It helps us burn those calories away, while improving our stamina. It is estimated that dance burns anywhere from 5 to 10 calories per minute depending on speed and intensity. For example, swing and mambo burn more calories than a slow waltz. Dancing Disco, Ballroom, Salsa, Latin and Mambo are the best forms of dancing for burning calories. One hour of these styles of dancing can burn between 350 and 550 calories per hour, the amount of calories burned increases in line with the weight of the person. Wether you’re out and about on the town or at home in your own living room - turn on some soul train upbeat disco tunes and move your body. Throw yourself into it like a trooper and work up a sweat. Lose yourself like you don’t care. Open the windows and pump your disco. For some inspiration on how anyone can dance, I have attached a couple of very amusing videos.

Jogging And Blogging

June 24th, 2008

It’s not secret that I would go so far as to say that I hate Jogging. But winter in Sydney means that Duncan eats too many Carbs and the middle section begins to show signs of my Miss Piggy-ism. I used to jog a lot when I was young, young like teenage young-young. I am a big fella so jogging hurts my delicate butch and oversized physique. But alas (I just used the word alas) I have started jogging in the past 2 or 3 weeks and I’m really getting into it. I still hate jogging - but I’m getting into it. It’s the movement of jogging that makes me suffer. But I like to sweat. It makes me feel as though I’m doing something with real gumption. Working up a sweat when I walk long distances seems to take 3 times longer. To break into a sweat means that the whole cardio routine is kicking in and something is happening. Something like, burning Fat. I hate Fat. I’ve always been slightly larger than the masses, so it’s an age old torment. Blogging is easy, I ramble about whatever. Usually I make a blog at my desk and the only exercise is my linguistic function and a bit of right brain storming. I never blog when it storms outside. I turn off my computer when that happens. The last thing I need is a big spark from the heavens thrown up the Ram of my Hard drive. That nearly sounds romantic. Blogging and jogging are two entirely different things, but I think I am start to love them both more and more each day - and that’s a good thing. As Norm said back in the 80’s - Life Be In It. And I’m trying - lord I’m trying.

This evening’s Blog Roll was brought to you by my fat mid-section and the Letter F (for Fat) and the Number 125 (for the kilos I am).
Oh, and www.happyguru.com and Duncan. Love to you all. DC. :-)

PS: I don’t plan on having children any day soon - but if I was a freak about jogging and taking the child with me, I would probably need one of these.
Children and Jogging AND Blogging can be quite expensive.

Plasma Televisions Cost The Earth

June 24th, 2008

null

Plasma televisions are sending home power bills sky high as more people install bigger and more energy-intensive screens. Did you know that over the course of one year, running a large screen Plasma TV in your home is equivalent to running up to 5 old-style televisions? Had I known that before I recently bought one - I wouldn’t have bought it. Mine is a massive 50 inch screen and and you can feel the heat coming off the display when it’s on. The Plasma technology is one big sucker of electricity. In a world where we’re changing light bulbs and trying to change people’s behaviour and awareness in the way they use electricity - the Plasmas technology sure is one mighty big step backwards. I even noticed when the next electricity bill arrived that it had just about doubled in price. I went looking for an answer and I found it. Plasmas are sucker of electricity. In Australia, large-screen TVs are among a number of new, energy-sapping products that are not yet required to have energy labelling or to meet any mandatory minimum standard. But even for appliances that wear them, can the energy star labels be trusted?

Facebook are Playing with My Head

June 24th, 2008

Above: Mr. Facebook himself. Mark Zuckerberg is the founder of the social utility empire.

Last week I blogged about my “delete” experience on Facebook. I felt like my little black book had been stolen from my bag. I had a page with well over 1000 friends on it - and Facebook got out of bed (on the wrong side) and decided to delete my page without a freckle of warning. I got really mad about it. I had done nothing wrong. Nothing rude was on my page - I could see no reason for the page delete. In defense of their actions I took to my keyboard and sent them a polite and pleading note, asking them to re-instate my beloved Facebook page and a request for reason as to why my page was wiped. I resigned to the belief that there would be no way I would hear back from the ethos of Facebook - I mean, I’m just one of many millions - and as if they cared enough to explain themselves. I sent, re-sent and sent again my e-mail to Mr. Facebook (three times in total). I went about creating a new page and going through friends profiles to try and locate my contacts. I spent nearly all of Friday night and Saturday day re-adding my contacts to my new page. As of yesterday I got up to finding about 500 friends back to my new page. This week I was feeling like I was getting some of my “online life” back, tailoring my Facebook page back to “Me”. This morning I got out of bed and switched on my MacBook notebook and sucked through new e-mails. I near fell off my chair to see an e-mail had come from Facebook. The e-mail read … “Hi Duncan, Your account has been reactivated and you should be able to access it now. Sorry for the inconvenience and delay. Please let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks for contacting Facebook, Amit - User Operations - Facebook.” Wow-wee. I was excited. I now have access back to my Happy Guru fan page on Facebook and all my videos and photos. I have all my friends back! This is a good day. So what do I do now with 2 Facebook pages. I’m a nice enough Duncan Carey for there to be 2 of us in the world - the same - but having 2 Facebook pages is silly. So now I am off to delete the new page. People (friends) must think I’m on some hard-core drugs or something. I disappear then reappear on a new page then the old page reappear and then the new page disappears. Work that out! Anyway, it’s great to have my page back. My persistence paid off after all. This blog post gets fed through to my Facebook page so hopefully friends on the pages will be put in the picture with what went on here with my profiles. Ok - as usual I’ve wasted enough time already today focused on fun and Facebook, so I best get into my Guru Ambition and get back to business. Thanks for reading and have a beaut day. This blog was brought to you by www.happyguru.com - Love to you all, Duncan. :-)
