60 000 Unwanted Pets

April 11th, 2008

Every year in NSW more than 60 000 unwanted pets are euthanased in pounds.
The Animals (Regulation of Sale) Bill is the first step to ending this tragedy.

Be a hero and speak for those who can’t. The dogs and cats of NSW need you
to help protect them from abandonment, neglect and suffering.
Contact your local MP and tell them to vote in favour of the Animals Bill.
Remind them of the need to have strong legislation to protect our pets.
Visit www.pawsforaction.com (Or Click Here) to get involved.

If you go to - http://www.pawsforaction.com/pcode.php - It asks for your post code and finds your local minister.
You then only have to fill in your details and a message is sent to your local minister straight away. Very easy.

Thank you for caring :-)

Aspartame : A Deadly & Disabling Artificial Sweetener

April 10th, 2008

Much has been written about aspartame (nutrasweet), the most commonly used of all artificial sweeteners, which has been at the center of numerous rows concerning safety. A quick search of google turns up thousand upon thousand of aspartame websites, few of which are complimentary (and those, predictably, come from the manufacturers). As a result, we at NHIC have decided that aspartame and related aspartame poisoning needs a review.

So here it is, the definitive guide to aspartame and aspartame poisoning.

Aspartame History : Aspartame began its somewhat controversial life not as a sweetener, but as a potential cancer therapy. It was given a limited approval in 1974, however after receiving additional studay data showing that aspartame might cause severe brain injuries in mice, the FDA ordered an aspartame review.

The review, published in 1975, and a subsequent further review revealed unethical, immoral and downright fraudulent behaviour on the part of aspartame’s manufacturers, G.S. Searle & co (now a part of the Monsanto group). Subsequent aspartame investigations and even criminal proceedings always seemed to stall, shortly after which those responsible for the investigations went to work for Searle or their attorneys, PR company and other “friends”.

Following several investigations into aspartame, it was clear it would not be approved for general use. Then along came a certain Donald Rumsfeld, to be CEO of Searle. Immediately things changed. Commissioners who had previously voted against aspartame changed their minds . . . then left for cushy jobs with Searle-related firms. Rumsfeld had Reagan appoint a “friendly” to head the FDA and pretty soon aspartame was “approved” - against all medical evidence, logic and process of law.

What exactly is aspartame?

Aspartame is composed of three main compounds - aspartic acid, phenylalanine and methanol (wood alcohol). Phenylalanine is an amino acid and is known to affect several neurotransmitters (a substance that is used to transmit signals in brain and nerve cells). It makes up 50% of the aspartame molecule and has been associated with cancers for many years, even being cited as “essential” for cancer development.

Methanol is the most basic form of alcohol (as opposed to ethanol, the kind commonly found in alcoholic drinks). It is an extremely poisonous compound, which, if drunk can cause many problems, including blindness and death. Although only 10% of the aspartame molecule, methanol is deadly and is readily released and broken down when aspartame is ingested, releasing formic acid and formaldehyde (embalming fluid!), both of which are poisonous.

The third component, aspartic acid is also an amino acid, which is widely recognised to excite nerve cells and has been linked to many brain and nerve problems including HDD, anxiety attacks, depression, headaches and migraines.

Holiday Spice Biscotti

April 8th, 2008

2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
2 extra-large eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup dark brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 tablespoon real vanilla extract
1 1/3 cups chopped walnuts
8 ounces white candy melts (or white almond bark)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Method
Preheat oven to 350 degrees with the oven rack in the center position. Sift the flour, baking powder, salt, and spices into a medium bowl. Set aside. Place the eggs and sugars in a mixing bowl and, with mixer, beat until fluffy and light. Add the 1/2 cup oil and the vanilla; beat until the oil is incorporated and the mixture is thick and smooth. Reduce mixer to low speed and beat in the flour mixture. The dough will be thick. Stir in the walnuts. With well-floured hands, divide the dough in half and form into two smooth, flat logs, each about 15 inches long. Carefully transfer the logs to a baking sheet, placing them about 2 inches apart. Bake for 30 minutes, until light golden brown and slightly puffed. Remove from oven. Using a serrated knife and a gentle sawing motion, cut the logs into 1/2-inch slices on a slight diagonal. Arrange the slices standing upright on the baking sheet, leaving about one-inch between the slices. Return to oven and bake for 10 minutes longer until the cut surfaces of the cookies have browned slightly and the biscotti are dry to the touch. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Line two baking sheets with wax paper. Heat the white candy melts with the 2 tablespoons vegetable oil in the microwave. Dip one end of each cookie into the melted mixture and gently shake off excess chocolate. Place cookies on prepared sheet. Chill until the coating is firm, about 30 minutes.

Notes: These keep well, so they can be made up to 5 days in advance.

Number of servings: about 3 dozen

misanthropic

April 8th, 2008

My best friend Andrew taught me this word last night. I was winging about the human race and he suggested that I might be - misanthropic. It was a joke of course. Those who are misanthropic are completely removed or are removing themselves from society because they basically hate every person in the human race. Rather severe don’t you think?

Here’s what the dictionary has to say:

misanthropic : marked by a hatred or contempt for humankind (adjective)

misanthrope : : a person who hates or distrusts humankind (noun)

I’m Proud Of Kev - Boycott The Games Babe

April 6th, 2008

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd won’t commit to attending Olympics

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is holding out on saying whether he will attend the Beijing Olympics, but has ruled out boycotting the event over the Chinese crackdown in Tibet.

Mr Rudd travels to China on Wednesday on the last leg his world tour in a much-anticipated visit for the Mandarin-speaking former diplomat.

He told reporters in London that whether he accepts an invitation from Chinese President Hu Jintao to attend the Olympics in August would depend on his schedule.

“What we’ve said to the Chinese consistently since then is that we’re not in a position to confirm whether we would go, it will depend entirely on timing constraints as we get closer to the event and that remains our position,” Mr Rudd said.

omphalos

April 4th, 2008

omphalos - \AHM-fuh-lahss\

Example Sentence:
“New Yorkers tend to see their city as the world’s omphalos.”

Did you know?
“Omphalos” originated as an ancient Greek word meaning “navel” and is distantly related to two other words of the same meaning, Latin “umbilicus” and Old English “nafela.” (The latter of these is the source of our word “navel.”) The ancient Greeks also used “omphalos” to refer to a sacred, rounded stone in the Temple of Apollo at Delphi that was supposed to mark the center of the earth. In the 19th century, English speakers borrowed “omphalos” for this sense and its more general “center of activity” sense, as well as to refer to raised ornamentation on a shield or in the base of a cup or dish. In the 1920s, “omphalos” made another contribution to English via the word “omphaloskepsis,” which means “contemplation of one’s navel.”

You Love Yourself

April 4th, 2008

And there’s nothing wrong with that! Dolly Parton sure knew what she was writing about when composing the song with the lyrics, “The greatest love of all, is happening to me - I believe the children are our future - teach them well and let them lead the way - show them all the beauty they posses inside - give them a sense of pride …

Loving yourself is one of, if not, The most important things to do in this life.

I’ve often joked that I trust no-one - simply because I find it hard to trust myself at times. And isn’t there a tone of truth in that? Sure there is. I’m Fat. I’m going on a diet. Diet starts. I see a cake at the shop. Oh, I can have it. I’ve been so good. There! Busted. You can’t be trusted. You fooled yourself, again. And over and over in our day we find ways to kid ourselves into believing certain truths about our reality. These fabrications give us permission to do as we please without the noose of guilt making us feel awful for being so untrustworthy. Oh well, what can you do. Eat the cake and be happy about it. Oh, and make sure you chew slowly and enjoy every single crumb of it. Forget the guilt, just be honest with yourself.

Surviving in this mad & beautiful world takes a life time of lessons - and fooling people into believing stories that you’re hell bent on confessing as your reality is a bid game we all get caught into playing at certain points. How can I make this person like me more or be less intimidated by me and so on … We trick ourselves and others all day long - whether or not we’re conscious of it - we do it. It’s not a bad thing, it’s about survival. The extent to which we fool ourselves is where, I believe, we all start to fall apart. That is the root of “Love Yourself Evil”.

I know I try hard every single day to look for ways of improving the person I am. Am I a good friend? What about being a good friend to myself? Am I good at looking after my ‘inner-voice’ and the words I use to self-talk myself and my way through the day? I try really hard to comfort myself and be a great mate to my own mind and heart. Nothing is more important. When it comes to radiating vibrations of self worth out to the world - I must start with being true and loving to myself. So yeah, I love Myself.

In an age where we are hell bent on accumulating friends on our social utility pages and presenting a persona that often really isn’t who we are - when does the time get set aside for stopping to check ourselves? People who meditate do this often. Some of us judge and critique ourselves walking around the house or on the train looking at someone else. How can I judge someone else so well by their appearance? Oh I can - don’t you worry. I have them all wrapped up in less then 10 seconds and the verdict on their character is in. That’s so cruel - but we all do it - maybe it’s an innate human characteristic.

The times when I feel uncertain about the strength of my own friendships is when I’m feeling down on myself or slightly vulnerable in my perpendicularity. They’re the “Blue Day Doldrums”. These aren’t the best times for making assertions about how good a person we are. Or, how good a friend we are. At these times I walk the fine line between being really hard on myself for not doing so many things that I should be and nurturing my inner spirit to remind myself of just how fabulous I really am.

Just “Love Yourself” is a good tune to hum to. No matter time of the day or month you’re in. Remind yourself how wonderful you are and how fabulous you will continue to grow to be. Then the inner strength turns you into your own super hero of self love and that’s a great place to be. It’s sometimes hard to keep up the reminders to keep on loving - but someone’s got to do it - and it might as well be you.

Have a fabulous day and please say to yourself more often - I am a good and true friend of my own. Then the world’s beliefs in you will follow.

Love to you all, Duncan :-) x

Where Have The Happy Guru Podcasts Gone

April 3rd, 2008

Well - Nowhere but Yes - An explanation is needed. I am so sorry I haven’t been on the airways to send you a podcast of late - and moreso, I’m sorry for not keeping you all informed as to what’s going on. My excuse is as boring as the next person when it comes to being busy and not getting things done - but that’s not the whole truth. I’ve been really focused on moving through some very outstanding or overdue jobs that have been sitting latent and alone for way too long - That’s my first excuse. Getting up to date with old jobs to bring “new to the front” is one of my most stimulating past times - Yeah - seriously - I adore getting up to date. And when it comes to getting up to date in our business - this is my own personal version of nirvana. Happy Guru just turned 2 last month - and there’s just mountains of exciting developments on the drawing board - just waiting to bust into the lime light of existence. So Podcasts have had to take a back seat in my Kombi and take a rest. There’s also another big reason for not getting a show out to you and that is, we’re simply out of web server space. So, we either shift hosting providers or upgrade to a bigger server. I dunno what to do at the moment - except get up to date with other jobs. The response to the podcast hasn’t been as encouraging as I had hoped - so to be honest - I sort of lost some steam and enthusiasm. That’s not a good thing to put out there, but it’s the truth and I can only hope that our listener base grows and becomes more responsive to our shows. Our jingles and shingles in the show will all be polished up and reinvented for when we return in the 2nd series. That return is scheduled for about mid way through May 2008. So, stay subscribed and you’ll be hearing from The Global Good Soul Vibration Podcast very very soon. Love to you all - Duncan xo :-)
