Australia Day, January 26, is the biggest day of celebration in the country and is observed as a public holiday in all states and territories. On Australia Day we come together as a nation to celebrate what’s great about Australia and being Australian. It’s the day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation. It’s the day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future. The tradition of having Australia Day as a national holiday on 26 January is a recent one. Not until 1935 did all the Australian states and territories use that name to mark that date. Not until 1994 did they begin to celebrate Australia Day consistently as a public holiday on that date. What drew Australians together in this way? Did Australia Day become a day for all Australians to enjoy? On Australia Day we recognise the unique status of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The National Australia Day Council is committed to playing a part in the journey of reconciliation through helping all Australians move forward with a better understanding of the past and how it affects the lives of Indigenous people today. While acknowledging there is much more to do, NADC is proud of making a contribution to reconciliation. We have developed, and are committed to our Reconciliation Action Plan, an initiative of Reconciliation Australia which enables organisations to turn good intentions into actions. This initiative surrounds the 40th Anniversary of the 1967 Referendum when more than 90% of Australians voted to acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as citizens. This event is often referred to as the first stage of the reconciliation movement. NADC thanks the staff of Reconciliation Australia for helping us appreciate the importance of Reconciliation. With their support, we take pride in our leadership role and hope others will join us in making a contribution to the process.
