Podcast Show Notes - Fruit 002
On Today’s show - lets discuss “Fruit”. When is the best time to eat it?
Here in sunny Sydney Australia, we’re half way through spring and the summer season of gorgeous new fruits for the season are about to start hitting the green grocer shelves. All those fantastic stone fruits of summer such as peaches, mangoes, nectarines, blood plums and the list goes on. There’s nothing more satisfying and refreshing than a piece of fridge chilled fruit to satisfy the taste buds on a hot summer’s day.
Most of us would think that eating simply means buying fruits, cutting them up and chewing away. From my own reading across the web, I quickly learnt that eating fruit at certain times can make a big difference to the nutritional benefits we gain from eating fruit.
Did you know that the best time to eat fruit is when you have an empty stomach? Yep that’s right - the absolute best times to eat fruit is when you have an empty stomach.
Eating fruit on an empty stomach means the fruit can go to work in the most productive way in your system.
Eating fruit on its own and not combined with deserts, ice cream or any other food substance - means that fruit is more productive in
effectively working as an antioxidant and therefor, effectively detoxifying your body. And here’s something interesting about energy levels you gain from fruit. The energy levels you can get from eating fruit are at their best when you eat fruit on its own and this results in better results when aiming for weight loss.
Alrighty - let’s say you eat 2 slices of bread then you eat some fruit. Fruit will always digest faster than bread.
So the fruit is ready to go through the stomach and intestines but the passage is blockked by bread taking longer to digest.
So what happens now? Fruit that is blocked from digesting at the rate that is natural to the system - will then ferment in the system and then turns to acid - so essentially what then will happen is that the food then spolis from the mix of digestive juices. Ew. That’s sounding nasty. So - always try to eat on an empty stomach or before the meal and not after.
From time to time you might hear people say - Every time I eat watermelon I burp, When I eat Durians (for those who aren’t familiar with Durians - these are a custard like fruit that are native to Malaysia) or any other fruits - my stomach bloats up or When I eat banana I feel like running to toilet etc. None of these symptoms would exist if you eat fruit on an empty stomach. The fruits mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas and hence bloating will be the result. Many nutritionists believe that greying hair, balding, nervous outbursts, anxiety & dark circles under the
eyes – all this will not happen if you take in fruits on an empty stomach. It is incorrectly presumed that some fruits like orange and lemon are acidic and will enhance acidity in the stomach.
Research however shows that all fruits become alkaline in our body. If you enjoy fruit juice as a drink - try drinking only freshly squeezed and not from the cans or for any processed products that usually come ready to pour.
It’s a good idea to avoid drinking juice that has been heated up or cooked in any way. Cooked fruits hold very little to barely no nutritional value - eating cooked fruit is really only a taste experience - there’s very little other benefits. Cooking fruits destroys all the vitamins. Added to the fact that we usually put stewed or cooked fruit on deserts or breakfast cereals - unfortunately this fruit preparation method is detrimental to the nutritional value of fruit but again, adding fruit to other food for digestion is a problem in itself.
So when it comes to fresh juice - the fruit with its pulp attached is far more beneficial then juice that’s free of pulp fibre. The fibre is a fabulous dietary aid for your system - but juicing fruit means that most of the valuable fibre is caught in the juice extractors filter. And of course, few people go back to the extractor to get this pulp - it’s usually discarded and thrown out. Eating the pulp or the whole fruit is far better than drinking the juice as the fibre is so tremendously good for you.
When it comes to drinking our freshly made fruit drinks with our fruit pulp in the mix - try to drink the juice slowly, this allows the juice to mix with your saliva before swallowing it.
Now if you really want to get a fresh start to detoxifying your body why not try a 3-day fruit fast? A fruit fast is a very simple and very effective way to cleanse and de-toxify your body.
Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!
During the fruit fast you can eat different fruits at different times, although occasionally mixed fruit salad would also be permissible and more interesting.
If you make some changes to the way you eat fruits, you will have the secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy and normal weight to look forward to. It really does make such a big difference when we eat fruit in the correct way.
From Happy Guru to you - we wish you happy fruit eating and a healthier and more productive way to get the nutrients that you deserve.
Before we close the show for the day - I’ve noticed from The Happy Guru Birthday Book that it’s World Rural Women’s Day. This day gives attention to over 1.6 billion or more than a quarter of the total world population women who work in a rural setting. Women produce on average more than half of all the food that is grown: up to Eighty per cent in Africa, 6O per cent in Asia, between 3O and 4O per cent in Latin America and Western countries. Women own only 2 per cent of the land, and receive only one per cent of all agricultural credit. Only 5 per cent of all agricultural extension resources are directed to women. Across this demographic - women represent two third of all illiterate people. The number of rural women living in poverty has doubled since 197O. You can learn more about World Rural Women’s Day by heading over to the official web-site at www.rural-womens-day.org. I’ve also noticed from The Happy Guru Birthday Book that it’s International Day for the eradication of Poverty on October 17 - you can read up on more about this day by heading to the United Nations web-site at www.un.org.
